We are living in a digital world with more connected devices and more wireless data to share. This requires reliable connectivity, new and higher frequencies and precise sensor systems. We at VTT have a unique team with extensive knowledge about millimetre wave technology, RF solutions and antennas for use in autonomous systems and robotics, wireless communications, public safety and healthcare.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly known as drones, are widely used in mapping, aerial photography, rescue operations, shipping, law enforcement, agriculture, among other things. Despite great potential for improving public safety, use of drones can also lead to very undesirable situations, such as privacy and safety violations, or property damage. There is also the highly concerning matter of drones being harnessed to carry out terrorist attacks, which means a threat to public safety and national security.

The publicly accessible measurement data can be utilized in the development of radar systems, as well as machine learning algorithms for more complex identification.

The development of mobile devices has set increasingly high requirements for wireless networks and the emission of radio frequencies. Researcher Vasilii Semkin together with a research group at Aalto University and Tampere University of Technology has recently tested in their research work how aerial photographs taken using a drone could be used in designing radio links.
